What is That Stuff Fluoride?
1. Why do some people disapprove of adding fluoride to drinking water?
Some people disapprove adding fluoride to the drinking water because an overdose of this can mean brown spots and stains on teeth. Although fluoride can protect your teeth from harmful bacteria dramatically, too much of it can also be bad for your teeth. Also, fluoride is rumored to be linked to diseases such as flourosis.
2. What would your position be on adding fluoride to drinking water and why?
I support adding fluoride to drinking water. Although fluoride might have the risk of some brown spots or stains, there are many more positive effects of it. Fluoride protects your teeth from harmful bacteria creating plaque, and remineralizes areas of your teeth where acid attack has already begun. Fluoride is put in our toothpaste and water to prevent cavities and tooth decay. Fluoride is a vital part of keeping our teeth healthy.
3. What technological advances in toothpaste had to be made before fluoride could be widely used in toothpaste and mouthwashes?
The only way for fluoride to be useful in toothpaste is for the fluoride to be paired with another compatible abrasive. In toothpaste, fluoride is paired with sodium or calcium pyrosphate to make a useful compound of fluoride. Sodium is used because it isn’t very soluble in the presence of calcium phosphates. This is why you will find sodium phosphate in most all toothpaste and toothpaste products (mouthwash) today.
4. What side effects of using fluoride in drinking water are of most concern to you? Why?
The side effects that most concern me are the fact that if there was a chance of an overdose, my teeth could suffer from brown spots and stains and possibly worsen if the overdose was not resolved as soon as possible.
